Atmel Unveils New FingerChip Sensor Dedicated to Mobile Communication Applications, Combining Security and System Navigation Capabilities
Allows New Features and Cost-Reductions in Mobile, Handheld Applications
GRENOBLE, France, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel(R) Corporation , a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions, announced today the introduction of a new member in its FingerChip(R) family of sensors. It is the first chip combining fingerprint authentication and state of the art navigation capabilities on an extended (1.8v-3.3V) I/O range.
Fingerprint authentication ensures protection of handsets, personal information and mobile networks, by letting only enrolled users access the device. Any security suite, such as password vault (Single Sign On) or file encryption applications can be implemented, allowing the user to conveniently command all preferred services, at the touch of a finger.
By using a patented sweep method widely recognized as the most efficient fingerprint image capture process on the market, the same touchpad also combines a unique navigation function. The user can scroll in any direction to browse through the mobile phone menus and select the item or application he wishes. This can replace sometimes awkward or unreliable mechanical navigation buttons, and reduce the bill of materials.
"With this new sensor, we went a big step further by providing intuitive authentication and navigation technology," said Philippe Ruffin, Atmel Biometrics Marketing Manager for Telecom Applications. "The FingerChip is now enabling deployment of value-added mobile services where strong user authentication is essential."
Due to a flexible architecture, that allows the authentication mechanism to run on either the handset or the SIM card, FingerChip-based solutions can match application requirements of cellphone makers and mobile network operators.
Relying on field-proven technology, it offers the lowest power consumption on the market (4.5mA in acquisition mode, 1.7mA in navigation mode, less than 10uA in stand-by mode). With also the smallest visible area (at 12x1.5mm2), the AT77C105A FingerChip is a perfect fit for mobile phone manufacturers willing to deploy innovative fingerprint authentication and navigation solutions. Colors remain available, thanks to a strong protection coating which makes all of the FingerChip family members the most robust silicon sensors today.
Samples of the AT77C105A and evaluation kits are now available.
